What is it?

A silvery white metallic element found on the 3rd row and the 13th column of the periodic table

Aluminium is commonly contained in:

Cookware/pots and pans

Foil

Takeaway dishes

Drinks cans

Anti perspirants

Cosmetics

Food additives

Aspirin

Astringents

Anti-acids

Vaccines

Roofing and sidings

Airplanes

Explosives and fireworks

Infant milk and soya formula

and

High levels of aluminium are found in the environment due to mining and the production of aluminium alloys

Aluminium compounds can also be found in:

Colouring agents

Anti-caking agents

Toxic Health Effects

According to the UK Health Protection Agency:

Inhalation can cause irritation, cough, sore throat, tightening of the chest, headache, fever, nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea.

According to the USA ATSDR (Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry):

Inhalation can cause lung problems.

High levels of exposure including oral intake can cause Alzheimer's disease

Brain, bone and kidney disease in children

And birth defects
